To enhance the quality of life by providing and maintaining safe and clean park and recreation facilities and providing recreation activities focusing on the residents of Huxley and reaching out within the Ballard School District.
WHAT WE DO
The Huxley Parks & Recreation Department, located within the Citizen’s Community Center (3C’s), employs 10 part-time recreation assistants, and 2 interns (one fall and one spring) as well as nearly 50 annual independent contractors for positions such asfitness instructors, youth program referees and scorekeepers. Our programs provide opportunities for Huxley community members, as well as, Ballard School Distcit ciommunity members.
The department and its employees and contractors are aided by the Parks & Recreation Board consisting of seven residents, appointed by the mayor, who advise and assist the city on needed facilities and programs to provide open space such as parks, playgrounds, swimming pools and community facilities for other forms of recreation. The Board advises the Director of Parks & Recreation on the use and development of city parks and recreational areas including developing a comprehensive plan for the city’s parks and recreational programs over a 5-year period, future parks and types, timetable for expansion or current facilities, and timetable for capital improvements. The Park & Recreation Board meets monthly on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:00 pm in the city council chambers at city hall.
The Parks & Recreation Board also has oversight of one advisory board. The Tree Board consisting of five residents, appointed by the mayor, has the duty to prepare, revise annually and administer a written plan for the care, preservation, pruning, planting, replanting, removal and disposition of trees and shrubs located within the right-of-way boundaries of all city streets or located on any other property owned by the city. The Tree Board meets monthly on the last Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the city council chambers at city hall.

Huxley Parks & Recreation Department is a proud member of the Iowa Park & Recreation Association and the National Recreation & Park Association. Huxley Parks & Recreation Department is also a member of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, Story County Conservation, and the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. Our memberships have generated grant applications and in some cases awards for the City of Huxley that may not been available.
